The stories of our people tell us that, in a burst of energy, the Creator formed humans from the elements of the earth, placed them in a place of abundance and beauty, and commissioned them to care for creation. Sometimes, however, we forget our relationship with the plants, animals, and elements of creation. Sometimes, we become consumers instead of caretakers.
When we think of the beauty and glory of creation, our first thoughts often turn to spectacular vistas: the Grand Canyon, Yellowstone National Park, and the Pacific Islands. Beauty and glory, however, are inherent in every part of creation. When we take time to look, they are always close at hand. And when we recognize the beauty of creation, we are inspired to care for it.
The Green Team invites First Congregational Church members and friends to join us for a brief time of reconnecting with the beauty of creation that is close at hand. On Tuesday, July 8, at 6:30 pm, we will gather at Marine Park, 100 Harris Ave, for a brief meditation on sea, shore, and sky. Poet Linda Conroy will share a couple of poems, and there will be a short opportunity for reflection on the gifts of water, air, and land. The program will last about half an hour. There will be time for conversation and fellowship. Those who wish to do so are welcome to picnic following the reflection.
The Green Team plans to make meditations in nature regular offerings to the congregation and community in the months to come. There will be opportunities for a walk in an old-growth forest, a chance to reflect on the beauty of nature in our backyard with a walk around the church, and other activities.
