Celebrating Local Peacemakers and Fostering Community
Please join this year’s International Day of Peace celebration September 21 at Structures Brewing from 3:00-6:00 pm, when the Whatcom Peace & Justice Center will host its 22nd annual International Day of Peace event to celebrate local peacemakers, multicultural artists and grassroots groups. The event includes a performance by Seattle based Afro-Latin band Samba da Renata, a reading from local Native poet and activist, Harmony Devaney, speeches from our Whatcom lifetime and youth peacemakers and other surprises.
Recognized by the United Nations since 1982 and the City of Bellingham since 2017, International Day of Peace is a day for communities around the globe to gather and reflect on how to cultivate a culture of peace. Founded as a hub for peace and social action, the Whatcom Peace & Justice Center has hosted the local celebration for over 20 years and invites all to participate. This year’s theme “We Keep Us Safe: Fostering a Culture of Care” honors that a community's resilience in times of fear and insecurity comes from strong relationships, mutual support and collective action.
International Day of Peace celebrates a year of peacemaking with impactful programming, networking and community connection. More than 20 local organizations are able to connect with one another and give over 300 attendees a chance to engage with their work, family-friendly activities and performances. Free children’s activities and ASL interpretation will be provided for the duration of the event.
